Fauna & Flora International, in association with Sir David, have launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indegogo to save mountain gorillas from extinction.
Sir David Attenborough has become a household name as a nature documentarian around the globe. He first brought attention to the thinning numbers of the critically endangered mountain gorilla in 1978 in the BBC’s series Life on Earth.
This is the first crowdfunding campaign the famed naturalist has been a part of and this campaign has was launched on October 31st, the UK’s first Crowdfunding Day.
The campaign was initiated by Mark Rose, CEO of Fauna & Flora International, along with Sir David, at a press conference at Parliament.
The aim of this campaign is to raise £110,000 by the 11th of December and this money will be allocated to increasing the current number of mountain gorillas in the wild from 880 to over 1,000.
This money will not only be helping preserve a species of animal from extinction but it will also aid all the people who make their living from organizing tours and other tourist activities. As this is an international campaign, mountain gorillas, as well as people, from Rwanda, Uganda and the Congo will benefit from this fund.
Attenborough highlighted this by explaining, “If we are to ensure the survival of mountain gorillas, it is vital that the global community supports our efforts. By supporting this campaign and promoting it through your networks, you will not only be helping to secure a future for mountain gorillas, but also the tens of thousands of Rwandan, Ugandan and Congolese people who have come to depend upon them for their livelihoods and wellbeing.”
Thus far the campaign has generated awareness in addition to approximately £13,000. The funding campaign still has a little less than one month to reach its goal, however, if they do not they will still have access to the money that has been donated already.
Indiegogo is a platform that is used by many all over the world to raise money for different purposes but this campaign received special attention from the head of the international sector of the company.
Liz Wald said, “We are thrilled that Indiegogo has been chosen as the platform to launch this extremely deserving campaign. Indiegogo has a broad global reach, which perfectly suits this campaign, given that Sir David Attenborough is such a world-renowned figure in conservation. We will be working closely with his team to support their outreach through media and social channels to ensure people across the globe can support this important goal of protecting mountain gorillas.”
