But HSBC Bank comes to the rescue with a breakdown of favourite destinations for work-minded expats.
The survey reveals different locations offer varied packages.
For learning new skills and to progress a career, Britain is one of the best places to work.
For expats looking for career development, Hong Kong and Singapore rank high, although many expats see a faltering work-life balance as a draw-back.
The Middle East offers the best employment package, with housing allowances, health benefits and paid trips home among the most popular.
The expat top 10 places to work
But overall, the top 10 countries for expats and their careers are:
- Switzerland
- Germany
- Sweden
- United Arab Emirates
- Norway
- Singapore
- Austria
- Hong Kong
- United Kingdom
- Bahrain
Switzerland has taken the title two years in a row with earning potential, easy going office culture and a good work-life balance tipping the scales away from rival locations.
The average Swiss annual expat earns US$188,275 – almost twice the global average of US$97,419.
“The start of the year is a good time for expats and prospective expats to reflect on what they have achieved and to start planning the next steps in their international careers,” said Dean Blackburn, head of HSBC Expat.
Work-life balance
“What’s clear in our survey, is that working abroad offers a wealth of opportunities to suit many different career needs and personal priorities.
“Some expats are looking for an accelerated route to the top of the career ladder, some want to put themselves on a firmer financial footing, while others want to improve their work-life balance. There is an ideal destination to achieve one or more of these goals.”
Blackburn also points out that expat life is not just about money.
Expats across Asia and in some European countries, such as Austria and Norway, may earn less than average but claim to enjoy their expat experience and time on assignment more than those in countries paying more cash.
“Europe is home to some of the best destinations for a successful expat career. Six European countries have made their way into the top 10 and are recognised for their strong work culture, great work-life balance and relatively good job security,” he said.
