10 Stupid Excuses For Failing To File A Tax Return

If you are late filing a tax return, here are 10 stupid hilarious excuses that failed to win any sympathy from the tax man.

All were reasons put forward by taxpayers for not paying what they owed or submitting self-assessment returns on time.

The deadline for handing a self-assessment return online and paying any tax due is midnight on January 31, 2017.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will accept a reasonable excuse for late-filing, but late returns pick up an automatic £100 fine and interest starts clocking up on overdue tax payments.

Yacht caught fire

Here are the 10 ridiculous excuses:

  • My tax return was on my yacht when she caught fire and the paperwork was ruined
  • I had my tax return with me when I crashed my car when I was attacked by a wasp while driving. The return was destroyed
  • My wife helps me complete my tax return, but she had a headache for 10 days and I didn’t know how to fill it in
  • My dog ate the tax return and all the reminders
  • I could not finish my return because my husband ran off with my accountant. I’m trying to find a new accountant to complete the job
  • My child scribbled all over the tax return, so I could not send it back
  • I am self-employed and a colleague borrowed the return to photocopy and lost it
  • My husband told me the deadline was March 31
  • My internet connection failed so I could not file online
  • The postman doesn’t deliver to my house

Questionable excuses

Ruth Owen, HMRC Director General of Customer Services, said: “Blaming the postman, arguing with family members and pesky insects – it’s easy to see that some excuses for not completing a tax return on time can be more questionable than others. Luckily, it’s only a small minority who chance their arm.

“But there will always be help and support available for those who have a genuine excuse for not submitting their return on time. If you think you might miss the January deadline, get in touch with us now – the earlier we’re contacted, the better.”
